Three Formats, One Maths

The first time I tried to compare a Sky Bet World Series price with a number a mate had screenshot from a US sportsbook, I spent ten minutes staring at “+650” wondering whether it was better or worse than 13/2. It turned out to be exactly the same number wearing a different jumper, and that single comparison cost me half an hour I’ll never get back.

That’s the trap with odds formats. Fractional, decimal and American look like three different worlds, but they’re all describing the same probability – the same edge or lack of it. Once you can move between them in your head, you stop being intimidated by US-style boards and start arbitraging between them. UK punters who only ever read fractional are leaving information on the table, because most of the deepest MLB outright markets – props, alternative win totals, niche awards – sit on US-flavoured platforms or on exchanges that default to decimal.

This guide isn’t about which format is “best”. It’s about reading all three with equal fluency, because that’s the bare minimum for shopping the MLB outright market properly in 2026. Fractional, the UK Default

Fractional odds are the format you grew up with if you’ve ever stood at a UK betting shop counter. 13/2 on the Dodgers to win the World Series. 33/1 on the Mariners. 100/30 on Aaron Judge for AL MVP. The maths is simple in principle: the first number is your profit, the second is your stake. A £10 bet at 13/2 returns £75 – £65 profit plus your tenner back.

The problem is that fractional gets clumsy fast on close prices. Is 8/13 better than 4/7? Is 9/4 longer than 11/5? You can answer those questions, but not in the half-second it takes to spot a soft line before it moves. The format was built for an era where most bets were 2/1 or 5/2, not for a 30-team outright board where the favourite might sit at 13/8 and the seventh-best team at 18/1.

Fractional also hides the implied probability under arithmetic that nobody enjoys doing on a phone. To convert fractional to implied probability you do denominator divided by sum of numerator and denominator. So 13/2 is 2 divided by 15, which is 13.3%. That’s the bookmaker’s stated probability of the bet winning before margin. Most punters never run that sum, which is precisely why fractional remains popular with bookmakers – it makes the maths optional.

I still use fractional for quick mental anchoring on UK platforms. But the moment I’m comparing prices or working out value, I convert. Always.

Decimal, Why Exchanges Use Them

Decimal odds give you the total return per £1 staked, including your stake. That’s it. A £10 bet at 7.50 returns £75. Same number as 13/2, expressed in a way you can compare instantly across a board.

The reason every betting exchange in Europe – Betfair, Smarkets, Matchbook – defaults to decimal is that it’s the only format where you can sort a column and trust the order. 7.50 is cleanly bigger than 6.50, which is cleanly bigger than 5.50. Try doing that with 13/2, 11/2, 9/2 in a stressful market and you’ll occasionally trip up.

The hold calculation is also trivial in decimal. Sum the reciprocals of every price on the board, multiply by 100, subtract 100. That’s your overround. On a typical UK MLB pennant board the figure lands somewhere around 110% to 115%, meaning the bookmaker is taking a 10-15% cut on the market. On exchanges after commission you’ll see closer to 102-103%. The difference between those two numbers, compounded across a six-month season of outright positions, is enormous – and you can only see it cleanly because decimal makes the arithmetic readable. Decimal also handles short prices without going Roman-numeral on you. A heavy World Series favourite priced 1.45 is obvious – you’re risking a pound to make 45p. The fractional equivalent, 4/9, requires more thinking than it should. For anyone who runs spreadsheets on their bets – which should be every serious outright punter – decimal is the only sensible working format.

American, the Format MLB Sites Use

American odds are the format most likely to trip up a UK punter, and not because they’re hard. They’re just signed differently. A positive number tells you what £100 stake returns in profit. A negative number tells you how much you need to risk to make £100 profit. So +650 means £100 stake returns £650 profit. -200 means you stake £200 to make £100 profit.

Why bother learning a US format? Two reasons. First, prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi quote in American by default, and the deepest liquidity for a World Series outright outside Europe sits on those platforms or on US-licensed sportsbooks that UK punters can’t access directly but can shadow-price against. Second, when MLB news breaks during the season, the first market reaction is almost always reported in American – Sharp Football, VegasInsider, every US-facing news feed. The conversion is rote. For a positive American number, divide by 100 and add 1 to get decimal. +650 becomes 6.50 plus 1, which is 7.50. For a negative American number, divide 100 by the absolute value, then add 1. -200 becomes 100/200 plus 1, which is 0.50 plus 1, which is 1.50. After a week of doing this on every line you read, the conversion happens in your head before you’ve finished noticing the price.

One thing American does cleanly that fractional doesn’t: it makes break-even points obvious. A -110 bet – the standard juiced US line – has a break-even win rate of 52.38%. A -105 bet has a break-even of 51.22%. Those numbers come up constantly when you’re reading US analysis, and once you internalise them you stop confusing “favourite” with “value”. A -200 favourite needs to win 66.67% of the time just to scrape level – which is a much harder bar to clear than the fractional equivalent of 1/2 makes it sound.

Conversion Table for Common Outright Prices

Here’s the working chart I keep pinned. These are the prices you’ll actually see on MLB outright boards through the year – division winners at the short end, dark horse pennants at the long end, World Series MVP outsiders at the very long end. I’ve laid them out in fractional first, since that’s the UK starting point.

1/4 fractional is 1.25 decimal and -400 American, with implied probability 80%. 1/2 is 1.50 decimal and -200 American, implied 66.7%. Evens (1/1) is 2.00 decimal and +100 American, implied 50%. 6/4 is 2.50 decimal and +150 American, implied 40%. 2/1 is 3.00 decimal and +200 American, implied 33.3%. 5/2 is 3.50 decimal and +250 American, implied 28.6%. 4/1 is 5.00 decimal and +400 American, implied 20%. 13/2 is 7.50 decimal and +650 American, implied 13.3%. 9/1 is 10.00 decimal and +900 American, implied 10%. 16/1 is 17.00 decimal and +1600 American, implied 5.9%. 33/1 is 34.00 decimal and +3300 American, implied 2.94%. 50/1 is 51.00 decimal and +5000 American, implied 1.96%. 80/1 is 81.00 decimal and +8000 American, implied 1.23%.

The implied probability column is what matters most. When BetMGM offered the Mariners a $450,000 prop on 90+ wins at -110 in pre-season 2026, the prospect of the bookie shipping out $409,090.91 in profit drew the headlines, but the underlying maths is mundane: -110 means 52.38% break-even, and the syndicate behind the bet was confident the true probability sat north of 60%. Read every outright price as an implied probability and you stop seeing prices and start seeing the bookmaker’s stated view of the world. From there it’s just a matter of disagreeing with that view, profitably.

The format that finally lets you do that disagreement on auto-pilot is whichever one you can read fastest without thinking. For me that’s decimal, hands down. For my dad it’s fractional. The one that won’t let you down is whichever one you’ve practised converting to and from the other two – because outright markets in 2026 don’t sit politely in one format any more.

Reading Three Boards at Once

By the time you’ve read this far, you should be able to glance at +650, 13/2 and 7.50 and see them as the same number. That’s the floor, not the ceiling. The real edge comes when you can scan a Sky Bet pennant board, a Betfair Exchange decimal column and a Polymarket American quote in the same minute, spot the line that’s drifted out of sync, and act before the others catch up.

Format fluency isn’t a skill in itself. It’s a precondition for every other piece of outright analysis you’ll ever do – closing line value tracking, dutching across providers, hedging an in-running World Series MVP position.
